Dear ProAgri Africa readers,

March always brings a shift on the farm, a moment to pause after the busy start of the year. Across Africa, farming is changing rapidly – and this season is no different. Some regions have received good rain, giving hope for a strong harvest. In other regions, farmers are already planning for the next planting season or preparing their livestock for winter.

This year, challenges like foot-and mouth disease remain a reality for livestock farmers. Vaccinations and biosecurity measures are being rolled out across many areas, offering relief and a renewed sense of security. Yet, we continue to think of our fellow farmers who are still battling disease outbreaks or navigating unpredictable weather. At the same time, exciting changes are emerging in African agriculture. Young farmers are stepping up, bringing fresh ideas, energy and business skills to the sector.

Technology is making its mark too, from mobile advisory platforms and precision tools to climate-smart practices that help farms adapt to droughts and changing weather patterns. Across the continent, farmers are learning to use data, innovate and connect to markets like never before.

Export opportunities are growing as well, particularly for fruits, vegetables and nuts. Even with logistical challenges, African farmers are finding ways to reach international markets, increasing both income and visibility for our agricultural sector. At the same time, policy and trade shifts across Southern Africa remind us that planning is crucial; every farm is affected by regional regulations, biosecurity rules and market access decisions.

Finally, we want to extend our sincere gratitude to veterinarians, extension officers and industry partners who work tirelessly behind the scenes to support farmers. Your dedication ensures that African agriculture continues to grow and innovate despite challenges. For me, this also marks my fifth year at ProAgri – and being part of ProAgri means being part of this wider community of African farmers.

It’s not just about crops or livestock about which I’m so passionate, it’s about stories, resilience, and learning from one another. As this season unfolds, may it bring you strength, new opportunities and hope for what still lies ahead this year.
