South Africa’s top-class Ankole and Boran genetics will be on offer at the Ntaba Nyoni 8^th annual production sale.

This highly anticipated auction is set to take place on Saturday, 1 March 2025, at 11:00 at Phala-Phala Wildlife, Bela-Bela.

The legacy of Ntaba Nyoni

Ntaba Nyoni has become synonymous with superior genetics and sustainable cattle breeding. In 2004, President Cyril Ramaphosa visited Uganda and was captivated by the remarkable Ankole breed. He purchased 40 cows and three bulls from President Yoweri Museveni, and through careful breeding and meticulous management, the largest Ankole stud in South Africa was established.

The success of the Ntaba Nyoni group is built on three principles:

Ankole: The breed of kings

Known for their majestic horns, resilience, and adaptability, Ankole cattle are among the most sought-after breeds in Africa. Their horns can reach up to 1,8 meters, and their coats range from solid rusty brown to speckled patterns. These cattle thrive in diverse climates, from cold and rainy conditions to warm, arid landscapes.

Ankole are low-maintenance, disease-resistant, and highly efficient on low-quality feed. They produce lean, high-quality meat and nutrient-rich milk, making them a valuable asset for South African breeders.

The Boran:

The Boran breed is known for its hardiness, efficient feed conversion, and natural herd instinct. These medium-sized cattle are characterised by a short head, small ears, loose dewlap, and a distinct shoulder hump. Bulls typically weigh between 500 – 850 kg, while cows range from 350 – 450 kg.

Boran cattle are highly adaptable to harsh environments, able to walk long distances in search of water and forage while maintaining excellent body condition. Their strong herd behaviour makes them easy to manage in the field.
