For Suikerbos Bonsmaras, their cattle are far more than just a breed, they represent a legacy of hard work and generations of elite genetics.

Nick van Deventer shares his passion for the Bonsmara breed with his father, who began farming with these cattle in the mid-1980s. Nick notes that if history has proven one thing, it is that long-term profitability comes from breeding exceptional genetics that excel across the board, rather than outperforming in only a few traits as is the case with many other breeds.

His stud was registered in 2023, and Nick reflects on that milestone: “I knew I was investing in some of the best genetics available in South Africa. It was the foundation for breeding Bonsmara cattle capable of producing exceptional progeny.”

The bulls in the Suikerbos Bonsmara stud are bred from outstanding dams that are functionally correct, easy-fleshing, highly fertile and backed by strong weaning performance.

“We are breeding cattle that do not just score high on breeding values, but cattle that will reliably wean a strong calf every single year,” Nick says enthusiastically.

The primary goal at Suikerbos Bonsmaras is not simply to produce the largest or fastest-growing animals, but to optimise overall profitability per hectare. They strive to breed balanced cattle that sustain profitable operations, targeting excellent feed conversion efficiency while maintaining consistently high fertility rates.

The distribution of the Suikerbos Bonsmara stud herd is split between the Northwestern Free State between Boshof and Christiana, and the Molopo region in the Tlakgameng district. Their commercial herd is kept exclusively in the Tlakgameng area, or, as Nick proudly refers to it, “the Texas of South Africa.”

At Suikerbos, certain characteristics remain strictly non-negotiable: fertility, growth, calving ease and milk production form the core foundation when breeding and selecting animals for herd profitability.

“These standards are non-negotiable in our herd. We select only the finest genetics to deliver exceptional outcomes. A well-balanced cow from proven bloodlines, paired with the right bull, will consistently produce superior calves,” Nick explains.

Over the years, Suikerbos has invested heavily in premier genetics, including Syferfontein Bonsmaras (SYF), AG Bonsmaras (AG), Sebadja Bonsmaras (SBJ), Boschoek Bonsmaras (AH), and Up George Bonsmaras (LAR). The core stud herd has been built around foundation bloodlines such as SYF 17-256, LAR 16-093, LAR 17-467, and AG 09-691.

On 9 September 2026, Suikerbos Bonsmaras will once again host their prestigious annual auction at the Glomix Event Centre in Schweizer-Reneke, North West.
