Meadow needs no introduction to South African livestock farmers. As part of the Astral Group, which has a huge share in the South African chicken production chain – from genetic production to several chicken meat and egg producer trademarks – Meadow supplies high quality formulated chicken feeds. This giant undertaking also manufactures complete feed ranges for other livestock.

Meadow’s feed factories are evenly distributed over the country. They manufacture fees in Delmas, Randfontein, Pietermaritzburg, Port Elizabeth, Ladismith and in Paarl. Meadow also has factories in Mozambique and Zambia.

A number of years ago Meadow saw a gap in their distribution network. Standerton is centrally situated in the eastern soybeen and maize region and surrounded by several Astral chicken farms. The area simply needed a feed factory. So, three years ago Meadow constructed a world class chiocken feed factory in Standerton. Energy consumption-wise this new factory is streets above their older factories and other factories in South Africa. The factory can also manufacture chicken feed cheaper as less labour and more efficient machinery is used.

Meadow can now also supply their chicken farms more cost-efficiently with the required feeds, which means a giant leap ahead in this highly competitive market.

The Standerton factory only supplies feeds internally to chicken farms in the Astral Group. The factory has a manufacturing capacity of 80 tons/hour (more than two truckloads full) or 40 000 tons/month. Additional space is available for future extensions.

In 2018 the Standerton factory transported an average of 29 065 ton feed per month to Astral units in the next link of their manufacturing chain, all of it in bulk transport. The Standerton fleet consists of twelve 36 ton  and three 30 ton bulk carriers.

The factory can receive 240 tons of raw material/hour and mill it at 120 tons/hour. Two 40 ton pilling machines, that can also apply enzymes and oils, can do their job at a rate of 80 tons/hour. Until the present Standerton factory has manufactured 1,51 million tons of chicken feed.

The factory has 133 employees operates constantly 24 hours every day for six days of the week. This includes manufacturing and delivery.

Meadow also has exciting plans for the factory’s future. Two 100 ton oil tanks have been erected already and at the moment five 1 000-ton oil cake silos and one 5 000 ton maize silo is under construction for the second phase of the extended factory. Mineral elements will soon be directly to the silos by means of blower pipes to minimise bags storage. These improvements will make an additional production of 50 000 tons/month possible.
