When working with livestock, stress should always be kept to a minimum. A stressful handling experience can affect an animal even after it has left the kraal and may influence feeding behaviour, recovery and weight gain. This is why Algar equipment is designed to make handling as calm, controlled and efficient as possible.

One of the most versatile products in our range is the Neck and Body Clamp. It is designed to give the operator greater control while still allowing easy access to the animal.

The Neck and Body Clamp can be used for procedures such as branding, inoculations, dosing, inspections and general treatment. It allows the farmer to safely restrain the animal while still maintaining access to different areas of the body. It can also make branding easier without the need for additional immobilising equipment.

For procedures requiring access behind the animal, AI gates can be added to the system. These provide a controlled access point while helping to protect the person working behind the animal. A shorter gate can lock towards the inside of the system, creating a protective barrier that helps reduce the risk of being kicked.

For procedures involving the animal’s head, Algar’s Chin Lift can make a significant difference.

The Chin Lift attaches to the front of the Neck and Body Clamp and allows the operator to raise and control the animal’s head. By restricting unnecessary head movement, procedures such as dehorning, dosing, checking teeth or applying eye medication can be conducted more safely and accurately.

Moving further back through the kraal, adjustable alleys are another important part of an efficient handling system.

A well-designed alley keeps animals moving in single file and helps prevent them from turning around. This improves safety and reduces delays. Few things are more frustrating than having to stop the entire process because one or two animals turn around in the alley.

Algar’s adjustable alleys can be narrowed from approximately 750 mm to 350 mm, allowing them to be adjusted according to the size of the animals being handled.

A backstop can also be installed in the alley to improve animal flow. This falling gate prevents animals from moving backwards once they have passed through a certain point.

This helps reduce unnecessary pressure on animals standing behind them and keeps livestock moving in the right direction. The result is a more controlled, consistent and efficient handling process.

A well-designed kraal should work with livestock’s natural movement rather than constantly forcing animals into position. Every unnecessary delay or difficult handling point can increase stress and the risk of injury.
