An electric perimeter fence, served by a dependable power source, is an essential asset on a South African farm at the present juncture of time. That is why more and more farmers turn to Gallagher to secure their property and be safe inside, and also to make sure that animals are encamped where they should be.

Gallagher is a world leader with a fresh approach to security systems for farmers. The company’s security involvement began way back in 1938 when Bill Gallagher (snr), of a farm in Horotiu, New Zeeland, made the first battery-served electric fence for himself. He soon saw the opportunity to make the life for his fellow-farmers easier too.

  He started out on the full-scale manufacturing of power sources for electric fences in 1948 and his fellow-farmers were eager to buy his products. He was compelled by the world demand for dependable systems to start an exporting business in 1978 and today Gallagher International is still expanding.

 Gallagher’s best-known and most popular portable power source is the solar-powered S100, which provides enough electricity to give a single wire a hefty kick for up to 30 metres.

Tobie van der Merwe, area manager for stock management in the Freestate, and Jean Gouws of Bethlehem, one of the lucky winners of the S22 solar power source.

The S22 portable-fence solar power source:

The Gallagher S22 portable battery power-plant is an affordable item for every farmer. The battery is charged with solar power and it sends a powerful shock as far as 2 km. It is the perfect solution for strip grazing, a temporary fence, or to erect fences where there is an unreliable or no network power supply.

 The solar option is a welcome solution for a farmer who fears that power failures will prevent his electric fences from operating. It is quick and easy to put the S22 into operation. The battery ensures that the power source will operate for up to three weeks without receiving a solar charge. It is encased in a waterproof container with built-in lightning protection. This means that it was designed to be used in the open, even in rain or hail.

Just follow the orange walking stick

The popular “stock-stick” which brought many feet to the Gallagher exhibit at NAMPO.

Gallagher this year came up with a crafty plan to draw attention at NAMPO. All over the farm people were seen with bright orange walking sticks which not only served as walking stick, but also as a walking advertisement for the Gallagher stall. When asked where they got the nifty little walking stick, they were pointed towards the Gallagher exhibit where it could be bought.

It also served a further purpose – people found it handy to point at things, and even took it home for later use on the farm as a handy helper to work with livestock. Gallagher calls it a “stock-stick”. Every person who bought a stock stick, was entered in a competition to win an S22 portable solar power fence power source.

The winners who could each take a prize home, were:

  • Jean Gouws of Bethlehem;
  • Corrie Janse van Vuuren of Vryheid;
  • Phillip Erasmus of Somerset West;
  • Jacobus Conray of Alldays; and
  • Mr Oostwald of Vereeniging.
