Electric vehicles (EVs) are changing the world around us in more ways than you can imagine. It is not just about installing simple charging ports; it is the infrastructure that supports them that needs to change as well.

What are transformers and why are they necessary?

Transformers change the voltage levels coming in from a power line. In the LiuGong power supply system, their primary function is to step down high-voltage power to low-voltage levels suitable for equipment charging.

Three key transformer requirements must always be considered when choosing.

Pure electric solutions are installed after grid power is brought to your site; this is where 10kV is stepped down to 380V DC for fast-charging applications or 220V for portable AC charging.

Battery-swap systems require transformers with sufficient remaining capacity, a stable voltage charge and auxiliary facilities to ensure a consistent power supply for the swap station. This ‘overhead’ ensures that when a battery is charged, there are no site-wide power fluctuations.

Tethered power solutions require significant cable runs between the transformer and the worksite, mine or warehouse. The transformer must supply sufficient current and voltage to keep a stable feed, while correct cable specifications prevent excessive voltage drop that could compromise equipment performance.

Capacity parameters that matter

When choosing which transformer to add to your infrastructure, consider the remaining capacity available after all your electrical loads are turned on. This ensures that when battery EVs are plugged into a LiuGong charging pile, there is sufficient capacity to charge the fleet without overloading the rest of the facility.

Use this example of a standard calculation to decide:

A transformer’s remaining capacity (SN) should be greater than the charging pile power (P), calculated as SN=P/0.9.
