Soil testing

Soil testing will give you an idea of the nutrients in your soil. Holland Greentech in Zambia is providing farmers with this service on behalf of soil cares. Holland Greentech are offering this service at K210.

The soil scanner device can measure the Soil acidity (which affects the solubility of the nutrient in the soil for plant uptake), Potassium, Phosphorus and Nitrogen (the three major plant nutrients) and in addition the Organic Matter Content (which enhances soil health), the Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC- which affects the ability of the soil to hold nutrients and water).

The results are presented as fertilizer recommendations, for a specific crop, for how much lime, manure and/or compost you can add before planting and how much fertilizer you can add at basal dressing and top-dressing level.

Knowing the nutritional content of your soil will help you to enhance it there by increasing the productivity of your crop.

Tuta absoluta pheromone

• They are used to trap and scout for adult male tuta moths 
• The capsules transmit the sense of a hormone which attract the male moths after which they can be trapped in a funnel/bucket or delta trap.
• Trapping the male moths is important because you can break the reproduction cycle of the tuta reducing or even preventing the reproduction cycle.
• The pheromones lures work for 4-6 weeks

Dbm (Diamondback moth) pheromone

• These lures attract male Diamondback moth
• Dbm is more prevalent in cabbage
• These lures are used together with the funnel trap to trap and capture dbm (funnel trap 400 kwacha each.
• The male dbm is attracted to the scent of the dbm female hormone lures

Sticky traps

• Price: K130/ sachet of 10 traps
•  Blue and yellow sticky traps used for trapping aphids, leaf miners, white flies, thrips, and sciarids
• They have sticky glue-like surface which traps the insects and can be used for scouting giving you information when and what to spray
• These insects are attracted to either the yellow or the blue colour and once they sit on the sticky trap they are stuck and die there.
• With regards to tall crops such as cucumber, tomato and pepper, position the traps just above the top of the plant and adjust while the plants grow
• With crops that have a canopy Support the traps with wire holders and install them maximum 30 cm above the crop.
