When people hear the word ‘biosecurity’, they often picture protective suits, masks, and quarantine zones established during disease outbreaks. In reality, biosecurity is woven into everyday life. It is present on farms, in veterinary practices, at animal shelters, in wildlife reserves, throughout food production systems, and even in our own homes.
At its core, biosecurity refers to the measures taken to prevent diseases caused by living pathogenic organisms, such as viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites, from spreading between animals, people and the environment. While governments develop policies and regulations, biosecurity is only effective when everyone understands the role they play in protecting animal and public health.
Veterinary and para-veterinary professionals are at the forefront of this effort. Through education, guidance and collaboration with animal owners, farmers, communities and industry, they help build a culture where preventing disease becomes everyone’s responsibility.

Biosecurity in everyday life
Many people unknowingly participate in biosecurity every day.
A farmer who disinfects equipment before moving between camps is practising biosecurity. A veterinary nurse who follows strict infection prevention protocols between patients is strengthening biosecurity. A pet owner who vaccinates their dog is contributing to biosecurity. An animal health technician educating livestock owners about disease reporting is helping prevent outcomes before they occur.
Even simple actions can make a significant difference:
•Washing hands before and after handling animals.
•Cleaning and disinfecting footwear, equipment and vehicles after visiting farms.
•Purchasing animals only from reputable sources with appropriate health documentation.
•Following quarantine protocols when introducing new animals to a herd, flock or household.
These measures may seem small individually, but together they create multiple layers of protection that reduce the likelihood of diseases spreading.
A targeted approach to biosecurity
Dr Vervoort, an urban mixed practice veterinarian, explains that veterinary professionals frequently adopt a targeted approach by identifying the specific pathogens that pose the greatest risk to a particular herd, flock, facility or animal population. Understanding how these pathogens are transmitted, their life cycles and the conditions in which they thrive makes it possible to design biosecurity measures that are practical, effective and tailored to each situation.
Rather than trying to protect animals from every possible disease, veterinary and para-veterinary professionals often take a risk-based approach to biosecurity by identifying the pathogens that pose the greatest threat to a particular herd, flock or animal population. By understanding the epidemiology of specific diseases, veterinary and para-veterinary professionals can develop achievable biosecurity plans rather than attempting to prepare for every possible threat at once.
Why biosecurity matters
South Africa’s agricultural sector, wildlife industry and companion animal population all depend on strong biosecurity systems.
Many animal diseases spread rapidly once they become established. Some can devastate livestock populations, threaten wildlife conservation efforts, and disrupt food production. Others, known as zoonotic diseases, can spread from animals to people, affecting public health.
When a disease outbreak occurs, the consequences extend far beyond the affected animals.
Farmers may lose entire herds. Families can lose their livelihoods. Food production may decline, affecting food security and increasing prices. International trade restrictions can be imposed, resulting in significant economic losses for industries that depend on exports.
Communities may also face movement restrictions, increased surveillance and costly disease control measures, all of which could have been reduced through strong preventative biosecurity.
When pathogens find gaps
Biosecurity systems are designed to stop dangerous pathogens before they gain a foothold. However, pathogens exploit weaknesses wherever they exist.
A single infected animal introduced without appropriate health checks can spread disease through an entire herd. Equipment moved between farms without being disinfected can carry infectious organisms. Visitors who unknowingly transport contaminated soil on their footwear can introduce disease into previously unaffected areas.
South Africa’s recent Foot and Mouth Disease outbreaks demonstrate how quickly diseases can affect animal health, farming operations, food production, trade and local economies. They also highlight the importance of ensuring that everyone, particularly animal owners, understand not only the regulations in place, but also the purpose behind them. Without widespread understanding and cooperation, even well-designed disease control measures become more difficult to implement successfully.
History has shown that once highly contagious diseases become established, controlling them requires enormous resources, extensive cooperation and considerable time. Preventing disease remains far more effective than responding after an outbreak has occurred.
Education is one of the strongest biosecurity tools
Biosecurity is not only about fences, disinfectants, quarantine facilities or legislation. It is equally about education, understanding and commitment.
One of the greatest challenges in implementing biosecurity is securing the support of everyone involved. People are often assumed to understand disease risks and prevention measures better than they actually do. Unless everyone involved shares the same understanding and objectives, gaps that undermine even the most comprehensive biosecurity plan can develop.
Veterinary and para-veterinary professionals play a critical role in closing these gaps. They advise farmers on herd health management, educate pet owners about vaccination schedules, support wildlife managers with disease prevention strategies, train animal handlers on infection practices and provide support during disease outbreaks.
Education empowers animal owners and the public to take responsibility for maintaining biosecurity in their daily operations. When people understand why biosecurity measures exist, and how diseases spread, they are more likely to follow good practices consistently. Rather than relying solely on external assistance, they develop the knowledge and confidence to recognise risks, implement preventive measures and respond appropriately when concerns arise.
Regular assessments by knowledgeable professionals remain an important part of the process. These audits not only evaluate whether biosecurity measures are being followed but also provide opportunities to strengthen existing plans as new risks emerge or disease situations change.
Protecting animal health also protects people, livelihoods, food security and the environment. By working together and following sound biosecurity practices, we create stronger communities that are better prepared to prevent and respond to biological threats.
