Astra Industrial’s history dates back to the 1970s. Today, the company is an ISO 9001:2015-certified and B-BBEE Level 1 supplier of mechanical access hardware, fasteners and linear motion systems, among other products. Its customers operate across sectors including mining, energy, rail, telecommunications, defence and general manufacturing.

The scope of the product range is impressive. Astra provides access to more than 39 000 engineered components from international brands, with products ranging from hinges, latches and gas springs to linear actuators, security fasteners and specialised fastening solutions.

But the value lies in more than simply having a large number of products available on the shelf. A new chapter with BUMAX

One of the most significant recent additions to Astra’s portfolio is its partnership with Swedish manufacturer BUMAX.

BUMAX appointed Astra Industrial Innovations as its first distribution partner in South Africa, making the manufacturer’s high-performance stainless-steel fasteners more accessible across South Africa, Southern Africa and the wider African continent.

And these are far from ordinary bolts.

BUMAX manufactures stainless-steel fasteners for demanding applications where conventional fastening solutions may simply not be sufficient. The range includes solutions with tensile strengths of approximately 1 500 to 1 700 MPa, while certain products are designed for operating conditions ranging from approximately -50 °C to 400 °C.

The combination of high strength and corrosion resistance makes these fasteners suitable for demanding applications in industries such as mining, chemical processing and marine environments, high-pressure systems, oil and gas, aerospace and defence.

For the local market, Astra’s partnership with BUMAX means this specialised technology is now backed by a South African distributor with an established understanding of local industrial operating conditions and requirements.

Andrew Williams, Managing Director of Astra Industrial Innovations, describes BUMAX as a significant addition to the company’s portfolio and says Astra sees considerable potential for the products in South Africa and across the rest of Africa.

When the smallest component cannot afford to fail

On a mine or in a factory, it is easy to focus on large machinery. Yet those machines ultimately depend on thousands of smaller components performing their jobs reliably, day after day.

A fastener exposed to corrosion, a hinge that is repeatedly opened and closed, or a linear actuator controlling a critical movement must all be selected according to the conditions in which they are expected to operate.
